THE REALIZATION
OF A DECENTRALIZED
ECONOMY ON BITCOIN
Advancing the development of Metaprotocols on Bitcoin.
SCROLL TO EXPLORE
[ 00 / Overview]
CORE PRINCIPLE
Layer 1 Foundation is a non-profit organization supporting the development of the BRC20 token standard and other metaprotocols built on Bitcoin and Ordinals.
We imagine the realization of a decentralized economy on Bitcoin—and support that vision through the development of governance standards, public tooling, and the promotion of builder education and discourse.
SCROLL TO EXPLORE
[ 01 / MISSION ]
CORE PRINCIPLE
Advancements made possible by Bitcoin’s Taproot upgrade and the subsequent development of the Ordinals protocol have changed our understanding of what’s possible on Bitcoin. What was once perceived as a simple store of value technology now carries the promise of delivering much more sophisticated economic functions—similar to that of other blockchains.
Layer 1 Foundation aims to support the development of open-source technologies that push Bitcoin forward—specifically the development and maintenance of BRC20, the first fungible token standard built on native Bitcoin, and similar metaprotocols currently in development.
OUR TENETS
L1F pioneers metaprotocol development, elevating Bitcoin's value.
L1F champions governance standards for transparent consensus.
L1F empowers developers with innovative open-source tools.
L1F curates a discourse forum to grow a community of thinkers.
L1F forges partnerships, advancing industry-wide progress and security.
[ 02 / PARTNERS ]
CORE PRINCIPLE
As a key part of this strategy we have partnered with the following organizations to support the maintenance of the BRC20 token protocol and other open source projects on Bitcoin.

THE FOLLOWING PROJECTS ARE KEY PRIORITIES FOR L1F IN 2024 AND BEYOND:
[ 03 / PROTOCOL GOVERNANCE ]
PROTOCOL GOVERNANCE FOR BRC20
As a first order of business, L1F and its partners are defining standards of governance for the development and maintenance of the BRC20 protocol. It is critical for the health and safety of both users and businesses that there is clear transparent consensus around how this protocol, and its indexers, are maintained. We are thrilled to announce that L1F has partnered with the leading indexers in the space to create a resolution for governance for the protection and benefit of BRC20’s collective user base.
[ 04 / TOOLS ]
PUBLIC TOOLING FOR DEVELOPERS
To support builders in this space, L1F aims to review, aggregate and share resources that may be useful to developers of metaprotocol technologies or technologies built on such protocols. Additionally, we aim to educate users about protocol updates, proposals and tooling that we believe pushes this ecosystem forward. In our aggregation of such technologies, we prioritize the promotion of tooling that is open-source and permissionless—and pursues decentralization when appropriate (e.g. for technologies that dictate value).

[ 05 / FORUM ]
Public Forum & Repository Resources
L1F supports ongoing public discourse related to both macro-level protocol development, as well as for the collaboration of development on independent projects built on these technologies. We hope to foster an environment where collaboration and discussion about these topics is easy and productive, and as such, have developed:
The L1F Forum for users and developers to collaborate and exchange ideas on projects and protocol advancements (aka ‘the forum’)
A Gitbook repository for the documentation of various standards and tools, featuring Gitbooks for each metaprotocol, serving as a comprehensive resource for developers (e.g. protocol specifications).
A GitHub repository to promote open contributions and collaborative development (i.e. protocol implementations).
Dashboards for the exploration of metaprotocols’ on-chain data—e.g. aggregated and custom displays of data analysis [COMING SOON].
By integrating community discourse with curated information and resources, L1F aims to foster innovation and collaboration within the ecosystem.
